The expert warned young people could be facing devastating cancer odds due to their diet
Professor Tim Spector is warning Gen Z and Millennials as the rates of colorectal cancer for young people double as compared to the 1990s. With those in their 40s facing the highest risk despite growing health trends in both generations.
Unfortunately, this age group also isn’t seeing the same results as older generations which have seen their mortality rates due to colorectal cancer dropping in the last few years. The prognosis hasn’t changed for younger adults.
The rising rates of this specific cancer in young people has somewhat stumped the medical community but famed British doctor Tim Spector believes its down to misinformation. He explained to Newsweek: “Younger generations want to eat well. However, because ‘wellness’ has become fashionable, there’s a great deal of misinformation on social media. This can make it difficult for people of any age to know how to eat healthily.”
He warned ultra-processed foods have been proven to increase the risk of several types of cancer including colorectal but it’s not just fast food and sugary treats that are included in this category. Many protein bars, granolas and artificial meats created for vegans and vegetarians also fall into the ultra-processed food category.
Instead, Prof Tim encouraged a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and healthy fats found in nuts, seeds, and oily fish to provide the body with a gut healthy enough to defend against the ailments caused by a modern diet. He added: “When it comes to protecting against colorectal cancer, it’s not just about avoiding the bad stuff—it’s also about doubling down on what actively helps your body thrive.
“Fiber does far more than just help with digestion; it regulates bowel movements and reduces the time harmful substances are in contact with the colon. That’s crucial, because anything that lowers the odds of toxins building up in the gut is going to help reduce cancer risk. Think of fiber as a kind of cleanup crew for your colon.”
