William and Harry are no longer close – but that wasn’t always the case. William decided to play a prank on his younger brother following his 2018 wedding reception, and it almost went awry
Prince William played a joke on Prince Harry on his wedding day to Meghan Markle and it left some guests “nearly floored” – quite literally.
While the two brothers are no longer close, things were different back in May 2018, when William stepped up to support his younger sibling on his big day. And William even took the opportunity to pull off a mischievous prank on Harry.
It took place at Harry and Meghan’s evening wedding reception, which was hosted by King Charles at Frogmore House, with some 200 guests invited.
But William’s prank at the party nearly went dangerously wrong, according to witnesses, and he “nearly floored” several partygoers in the process.
It took place around midnight, just before the newlyweds prepared to leave the reception. William decided to tie a ladder onto the back of their car, in reference to a recent accident Harry had endured.
A royal insider told the Express: “Harry and Meghan went about midnight, shattered and madly in love. Apparently, Harry fell off a ladder recently while changing a light bulb for Meghan and hurt his arm. So Wills tied a ladder to the back of the car, which nearly floored a few people.”
William and Harry used to be incredibly close. In a clip filmed around his 21st birthday, Harry said of his older sibling: “He is the one person on this earth who, I can actually really, you know, we can talk about anything and we understand each other and give each other support and everything’s fine.”
But following Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal life in 2020, things have soured. Neither King Charles nor William spent any time with Harry during his visit back to the UK last week.
Royal author Tom Quinn has said Harry’s visit did “nothing” to repair damaged royal relations with the duke appearing to be “publicly snubbed by his father and brother”.
He told The Mirror: “Harry’s visit to the UK has done nothing to repair royal relations – Harry has been very publicly snubbed by his father and brother.
“[William] says nothing. It is as if Harry no longer exists. There’s been no obvious criticism from either side, but the silence from William is deafening.”
He further highlighted the King’s decision to make Prince William the Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corp, describing the move as a “kick in the teeth” for Harry and hinting that King Charles may have chosen the timing to send a clear message to his younger son after his “betrayal” of the royal family.
He told The Mirror that insiders claim the Palace knew the timing of the move would “really hurt” Harry, claiming that “he is said to have been in tears when he heard”. He added: “But they have decided the gloves are off and that Harry needs to realise that when you betray the family, you don’t just escape the things you hated doing as a working royal. You also lose the things you loved.”
“King Charles’ announcement that Prince Harry is being stripped of his role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps is a real kick in the teeth for the son who always felt marginalised and underrated. What makes it much worse is that the role is being given to the very man who Harry sees as the cause of so many of his problems – his brother. And the announcement was deliberately made during Harry’s brief visit to the UK to have maximum impact; it shows Harry that he really is no longer welcome.”
