Crews from North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance were sent to the scene in South Shields, Tyne and Wear
One person has been taken to hospital after a crane collapse at a port in England.
Crews from various emergency services were sent to the scene of the incident at the Port of Tyne in South Shields, Tyne and Wear. The incident involved a dockside crane and took place this afternoon, at around 1.02pm.
Crews from North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance were sent to respond to the incident after one person was injured. A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called to an incident in which a person was injured at the Port of Tyne, South Shields, at 1.02pm on 19 July.
“We dispatched three double crewed ambulances, two clinical team leaders, a duty officer, three vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and were supported by Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
“One of our HART vehicles remains at the scene on standby to support the fire service.” Photos from the scene show damage to a crane and several containers on a BG Freight Line vessel.
Mike, who runs YouTube channel Urbex Drone View, heard about the incident online and saw the aftermath, ChronicleLive reports. He saw the emergency services at the scene when he was approaching from the north of the River Tyne.
Mike said: “When I arrived on the north side to get some drone footage, I was met with the tangled wreckage of the dockside crane, highlighting the sheer force of the incident. Behind a line of emergency service vehicles, I could also see that several cargo containers aboard the BG Orange had been dislodged from their original positions, as shown in the accompanying photographs.”
Mike added: “It was quite horrific to see something like that. You don’t know who’s injured. I think certainly a major incident was declared. The amount of emergency vehicles there: fire engines, ambulances, and from what I’ve heard two air ambulances were deployed.”
The drone operator continued: “Seeing the extent of the damage brought home just how serious the incident was. It is difficult to imagine what those working on the dock or aboard the vessel must have experienced at that moment.
“My thoughts are with everyone involved and their families, and I sincerely hope that all those affected are safe and receive the support they need.”
