A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear after police were called to reports of a shooting in Salford
A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a “prolonged stand-off” with police who were called to reports of a shooting.
Armed police were scrambled to St Joseph’s Drive, in Salford, just after 8.15pm on Sunday night (February 1) after receiving reports that “a firearm had been discharged”. Officers had a ‘prolonged stand-off’ at a property, on the residential street that has terraced housing, with the suspected gunman before he was detained.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said with an investigation is now underway.
It is understood that shots were aimed towards someone but nobody was hurt in the shooting, reported the Manchester Evening News.
An appeal has been made by the force for witnesses or anyone with information including CCTV and dashcam footage, to get in touch. Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles said the incident is being ‘treated with the utmost seriousness’.
Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles said: “We are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness. The use of firearms and acts of intimidation have absolutely no place in Greater Manchester, and we will not tolerate them. Our officers responded swiftly to protect the public, and our investigation will continue to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“My appeal to the public is this: if you witnessed anything, or if you have any information that could assist our enquiries, please come forward. This includes anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the area at the time.”
And a full statement from Greater Manchester Police read: “Officers have arrested a 36-year-old man in Salford on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear. At around 8.16pm on Sunday 1 February, officers were called to reports that a firearm had been discharged on St Joseph’s Drive, Salford.
“Armed officers were deployed, and following a prolonged stand-off at a property on St Joseph’s Drive, a man was safely detained. He remains in custody for questioning.”
