Police raced to the Capital retail park in Leckwith, Cardiff, after a man was seen with a knife at the busy shopping centre – he was detained at the scene
A man was detained by police after he was seen with a knife at a busy shopping centre just days before Christmas.
The incident happened at the Capital retail park at Leckwith beside the Cardiff City Stadium.
Officers from South Wales Police arrived quickly after calls were made. The man was detained by midday on Tuesday, the force said on Wednesday afternoon, WalesOnline reports.
When officers arrived a suspect had left the scene, but a man was arrested within 45 minutes and a knife was recovered. Jay Robert, from Canton, was later charged with being in possession of a pointed or bladed article in a public place.
The 31-year-old appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to the offence. He has been remanded into custody until a further hearing at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on January 6 for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
Inspector Richard Lloyd from Fairwater Police Station said: “We hope this update provides some reassurance to the public who witnessed yesterday’s incident. South Wales Police takes all reports of knives or weapons in public seriously and will always respond to concerns and reports.”
