A bombshell report from the Mirror has placed a Serbian assassin in the frame for the murder of popular TV presenter Jill Dando in 1999, and the police have a duty to follow these new leads
Jill Dando’s unsolved brutal murder 25 years ago on her own doorstep shocked the nation and police have a duty to fully investigate potentially-crucial new evidence uncovered by the Daily Mirror.
A facial recognition expert finding similarities between an unidentified person caught on CCTV and twice-convicted Serbian murderer Milorad Ulemek is a fresh line of inquiry that must be pursued.
When Jill was killed in 1999, Ulemek led a feared squad of hitmen responsible for targeting opponents of brutal dictator Slobodan Milosevic.
Back then, suspicions were raised the BBC presenter was assassinated over her appeal for Kosovan refugees being massacred by Milosevic’s forces in a confilct which led to the breakup of Yugoslavia.
Jill’s family and loved ones, wrongly convicted and jailed Barry George and even justice itself all deserve the truth.
Spying charge
It is embarrassing for Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and Commons Foreign Affairs Committee chair Alicia Kearns to be linked to a Tory Parliamentary researcher charged with spying for China.
Chris Cash, 29, who was employed by Kearns and who worked with Tugendhat, is accused of breaching the Official Secrets Act alongside a second man Christopher Berry, 32.
Cash and Berry are entitled to a fair trial before a jury so it is important that comment does not prejudice the court case.
But imagine the political fuss the Tories would be making if the charges were against somebody working for senior Labour figures.
Howay to do it
North East crooks could finally get away with murder after Brenda Blethyn hands in her warrant card as TV detective Vera.
An older woman in a trench coat who drives a battered Land Rover showed that police officers don’t need to be young, male and southern to be successful.
