The day is fast-approaching
Brits have been told of a date next week that could be the optimum time to list items on Vinted. After Christmas and into the New Year, many households like to declutter and make their homes feel a bit more spacious.
And those who do could be in for a tidy sum, as the UK gears up for the busiest day of the year for second-hand selling. Online platform Vinted has declared Sunday, January 4, as the nation’s prime time for listings – coining it ‘Sell-It Sunday’ – following data revealing that activity can skyrocket to triple the usual daily rate.
The potential pay-off could be quite significant. According to Vinted’s research, there’s a small fortune lying dormant in British homes, with over half of people reckoning they have more than £400 worth of unwanted items gathering dust.
Approximately one in six estimate the value of their unused possessions to exceed £1,000. The platform noted that the new year serves as a natural reset point, when many reassess what they truly need following the Christmas splurge.
Fashion remains the top earner, with ill-fitting or disliked clothing among the most frequently listed items. Last year’s hot categories included women’s toiletries, perfumes, jewellery, nightwear and makeup – all typical festive gifts that often go unused.
But the demand isn’t confined to fashion. Vinted reported a strong buyer interest in entertainment and electronics, with books, magazines, CDs and vinyl experiencing a surge in searches. Over 55% of British shoppers indicated they’d be open to purchasing such items pre-owned, whilst smaller electronic goods are becoming more prevalent amongst January postings.
The firm noted this pattern underscores consumers’ increasing readiness to utilise resale platforms for routine buys. Jessie de la Merced, Vinted’s vice-president of corporate affairs, described the January surge as having evolved into a nationwide custom.
She said: “Sell-It Sunday isn’t just the moment unwanted gifts get a second life. It’s become a national reset, a day when millions of people turn clutter into cash, explore fresh styles and discover everything from fashion to electronics on Vinted. It shows how second-hand shopping continues to grow as a smart, stylish choice for 2026.”
Vinted anticipates that sealed gift sets, untouched fragrances, books and garments bearing their original labels will feature prominently in this year’s listings. The platform has encouraged members to get organised beforehand by sorting through cupboards and storage spaces, enabling swift uploads to take advantage of the buyer influx.
Accessories and sleepwear generally experience notable spikes in popularity during early January, whilst electronics and entertainment products are projected to expand even more substantially this year.
Market experts suggest early January has now become firmly established in the retail landscape as a peak window for pre-owned transactions, with countless users logging in to seek out deals – and transform festive excess into ready money.
