Doctors initially tried to remove the bizarre collection of metal objects using endoscopy, but were forced to perform a three-hour operation to get everything out

Doctors made an extraordinary discovery when a man was admitted to hospital complaining of severe stomach ache.

The 34-year-old was rushed in by his worried relatives after being left in so much pain that he was struggling to eat or drink.

Medics conducted a scan – and were astonished to see the man had a watch stuck in his oesophagus, along with iron fragments, nuts and bolts trapped in his large intestine.

Doctors were ultimately forced to perform a three-hour operation to get everything out. The objects – including the watch – were removed through a small incision in his abdomen, with shocking footage showing the moment surgeons pulled them free.

The man was admitted to Sawai Mansingh Hospital in Jaipur, India, on 9 October. Thankfully, he is now said to be recovering well after the stomach-turning surgery.

He is by no means the only person discovered with ‘foreign objects’ inside his body. A woman was previously discovered to have a fountain pen wedged inside her stomach. The four-inch object was detected after medical experts carried out an x-ray on 20-year-old Shing Fang at a hospital in Taipei, Taiwan.

The patient had been in pain for six months, and was no longer able to eat properly or concentrate on her studies. The pen was discovered after an endoscopy was carried out by inserting a camera through her mouth and into her stomach.

While the utensil was badly eroded by stomach acid, it was identified as a fountain pen – and she was operated on immediately. Doctors have since concluded that had the object remained in her any longer it could have led to peritonitis – or even death.

It was unclear how the pen had ended up in her stomach; the patient said she had no memory of swallowing it. But she agreed that it might have been caused by drinking too much to celebrate her success in exams .

Meanwhile, back in 2019, it was revealed that doctors had had to remove a pile of stones, bottle caps and coins from a man’s stomach, after he ate them to cure his anxiety.

The 54-year-old was admitted to the hospital suffering from severe stomach pains and bloating. Concerned doctors ran a number of tests to see what might be the cause of the Korean patient’s painful symptoms. They noticed that they could feel ‘something resembling small stones’ when they touched his abdomen.

Scans then revealed a huge build-up of objects ‘occupying the whole stomach’ of the patient, and a collection of stones, bottle caps and coins weighing 4.4lbs (2kg) were removed.

The patient was thought to have swallowed the items over long periods of time as a way of dealing with anxiety.
