The secluded two-bedroom cabin was built in 1926 – but it comes with a catch
A quaint off-grid cabin, said to be “home to fairies”, is up for grabs at £165,000. But, the surrounding area has its own sinister story.
Nestled in a peacefully secure spot in Northumberland’s Whittle Dene Woods, this cabin could be a haven for nature lovers. The property listing states: “The banks of the burn are home to newts, while an abundance of birdlife can be spotted overhead.
“In spring, listen for the melancholy song of the willow warbler and look out for the daring displays of male buzzards as they try to attract a mate by soaring and swooping through the sky like a rollercoaster. Come nightfall, you will hear the soft hooting of the wood’s resident owls and spot bats flitting through the trees.
“At dusk and dawn, roe deer acrobatically bound through the trees. Deadwood found dotted across the woodland provides homes for wood-boring beetles.”
The cabin is fully equipped with electricity and features USB sockets in every room. The set-up is powered by four large solar panels that charge two separate battery banks, with a backup 3000-watt electric generator, reports the Express.
The property also has full plumbing, with hot and cold running water throughout, courtesy of two Calor gas boilers. A large log burner provides warmth, while water is supplied by the mains and drainage is via a soakaway.
The property listing adds that the area might be home to something magical, with locals claiming the area is “steeped in folklore” and is said to be “home to fairies” among the old tree hollows, toadstools and vibrant bluebells of the ancient woodland.
That’s not the only legend at large, though – as potential homeowners were also warned of an ancient thief and killer known as Long Lonkin. Tales of this notorious criminal claim that they became infamous for heinous acts, including theft and murder, with his final nefarious act cementing his notoriety.
But, if that doesn’t put buyers off, they could own “the only available off-grid ‘cabin in the woods’ in the UK”. The property is currently on the market with GFW for offers over £165,000.
