Newcastle quickly identified Al-Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle as their top target to replace Eddie Howe, but the announcement of his appointment was delayed – until now
Newcastle have finally confirmed the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as their new manager. Jaissle, 38, arrives from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, with Newcastle paying a £9.5million compensation fee.
The German replaces Eddie Howe, who shockingly resigned midway through pre-season last week. Jaissle has already been working with Newcastle’s squad in La Manga, Spain for the last few days.
But Al-Ahli wanted to delay the announcement until 7pm on Wednesday. Jaissle spent three years in Saudi Arabia following spells with Red Bull Salzburg and Liefering in Austria.
In each of the last two seasons, Al-Ahli won the Asian Champions League. But the 38-year-old has decided to move to St James’ Park, kicking off a new era at the Saudi-owned club.
“When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice,” Jaissle commented in Newcastle’s announcement. “The ambition of the club, the vision for the future and the opportunity ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be.
“I have followed the club’s journey closely in recent years and the progress that has been made is clear for everyone to see. I am incredibly excited about the future. I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition and the direction the club is taking.
