Staffordshire Police said Suzanne Cherry, 62, of Aldridge, died in hospital on Tuesday night after she was struck by a van at Aston Wood Golf Club, on Blake Street in Sutton Coldfield, police said
Tributes have poured in for a “much loved” mum-of-three who police said died after being hit by a van on a golf course.
Staffordshire Police today named Suzanne Cherry, from Aldridge, as the woman who died in hospital on Tuesday night after she was struck by a van on a golf course in Sutton Coldfield. It is understood the van was being pursued by police through Aston Wood Golf Club at 10.25am on April 11. Three men have been arrested this week while neighbours and members of the golfing community have issued tributes remembering the mum while lamenting the “tragic and very sad occurrence”.
Police said: “Officers from West Midlands Police arrested three men on Wednesday, April 16. A 51-year-old man, from Bloxwich, was arrested on suspicion of murder, a 22-year-old man, from Dudley, on suspicion of manslaughter and assisting an offender and a 41-year-old man, from Worcester, on suspicion of assisting an offender.
“They are being questioned by detectives in custody in Staffordshire. We are continuing to search for a man that was seen leaving Aston Wood Golf Club, on Blake Street, on foot after the collision.”
Ms Cherry sustained serious injuries following the collision which happened as she played golf with her husband and was airlifted to hospital, where died on Tuesday. A neighbour has remembered the “much-loved” mum following her death this week. They told MailOnline: “She was a much-loved friend and neighbour. What happened was just appalling. She was playing golf with her husband. He saw it all happen and is a broken man.”
A second neighbour added: “Going to play the game you love on a beautiful day and then that happens. It is beyond comprehension. Why would anyone be driving a van up that bank and onto a golf course. It’s insanity.”
Calderfields Golf and Country Club members, directors and staff also offered their condolences to the mum’s family and friends in their own statement following the “tragic and very sad occurrence”.
They said: “Our thoughts also go out to our neighbours, their staff and friends at Aston Wood, this was a tragic and very sad occurrence which should not happen anywhere, let alone on the tranquil environment of a golf course.” Ms Cherry’s devastated husband, who lived with her in nearby Aldridge, was too upset to comment on Friday.
Staffordshire Police said investigators are “piecing together his movements after the collision”, and that they were going through footage collected from the scene and sent in following police appeals.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police renewed the call for members of the public to pass along vital information, especially dashcam, CCTV and doorbell footage from the area of Blake Street and Birmingham Road between Sutton Coldfield and Shenstone.
They said: “If you have any dashcam, CCTV, doorbell footage or if you were in the area of Blake Street and Birmingham Road between Sutton Coldfield and Shenstone at approximately 10.25am on Friday please get in touch.
“The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the circumstances prior to the collision when officers from West Midlands Police had responded to the vehicle being involved in reports of suspicious activity.”
