Emily Casey, 34, from Wirral, was put into an induced coma after falling ill with pneumonia and sepsis on holiday in Gran Canaria with her husband Jamie and their five children, aged one to 13 — her family are desperately raising £50,000 for a medical flight home
The family of a mum-of-five who is stuck in hospital in Gran Canaria after contracting sepsis have said they “just want to get her home to her babies.”
Emily Casey, 34, was placed into a coma after falling ill while on holiday in the Canary Islands with her husband Jamie Casey and their five children. On Wednesday, May 13, merely three days after the family, from Wirral, travelled to the island, Emily began experiencing breathing difficulties and was rushed straight to a local hospital.
She’d recently made a full recovery from pneumonia, so medics initially suspected she had developed a blood clot in her lung.
A CT scan was carried out and the mum was informed the pneumonia had come back, reports the Liverpool Echo. Doctors revealed one of her lungs was “full of fluid,” which would require draining.
Jamie headed back to the family’s hotel to care for their five children that evening. Throughout the night he rang and texted Emily repeatedly to ensure she was alright while their children slept, but received no reply.
The following morning Jamie hurried back to the hospital, where he discovered his wife was in an induced coma on a life support machine. In a panic, Jamie contacted their relatives back in the UK and Emily’s mum travelled to Gran Canaria to assist in looking after her.
When their holiday concluded on Tuesday, 19 May Jamie returned to Liverpool with their children to sort out childcare arrangements. He travelled back to Gran Canaria days afterwards to remain at his wife’s bedside.
When he returned, he was devastated to learn that his wife had developed sepsis. The family received further dire news that Emily’s condition had “gone backwards”, with scans showing pneumonia had “taken over her lungs again,” and sepsis now present in her bloodstream.
More than three weeks on, Emily remains stranded in hospital in Gran Canaria. Family member Kevin Magee, who first reached out to the ECHO, revealed she was conscious but “in and out of sedation.”
He stressed that the family “need to get her home to her babies,” – Summer, 13, Oscar, 11, Isabelle, seven, Sophia, four and Willow, one. The family are “desperately” appealing for support to bring Emily back home and must raise £50,000 to fund a medical flight back to the UK.
