A major UK supermarket will close a popular high street branch tomorrow after almost 100 years in business.
Marks & Spencer branch St Mary Street in Weymouth, Dorset will close on Tuesday, July 14.
The closure will mark the end of a 93-year tenure for M&S in the high street site, but a new location will open on Wednesday, July 15 at Weymouth Gateway Retail Park.
The 41,000 square-feet superstore will feature a food hall, café and a fashion, home and beauty offerings, as well as an in-store bakery.
The new location will be double the size of M&S’ existing high street branch.
The change has left some locals upset, reports The Sun.
“I really am quite sad, it’s been part of my life since I was at college in Weymouth in the 70s,” one local said.
“I like going in most days for bits and pieces.”
Another explained they would have to take two buses to travel to the new location. The move is part of M&S’ relocation strategy.
The chain recently opened two new city centre full-line stores – one at Bath Southgate in February and Bristol’s Cabot Circus last November.
