The longline coat looks like it takes inspiration from Burberry’s trench coats, but retails for a fraction of their price
Marks and Spencer customers are singing the praises of a ‘smart’ trench coat that appears far pricier than its actual cost. In fact, this high street gem could easily be mistaken for a Burberry piece.
The Checked Belted Longline Tailored Coat, priced at £90, bears a striking resemblance to styles from the luxury British heritage brand. Rather than replicating a specific Burberry coat, it draws inspiration from several different designs. The M&S coat shares a similar silhouette with Burberry’s Long Cashmere Kensington Trench Coat, boasting a longline design and shoulder epaulettes. If you were to splash out on the designer trench, it would set you back a hefty £2,990.
Available in sizes six to 24, the Checked Belted Longline Tailored Coat is crafted in a regular fit, complete with a matching waist-cinching belt. The longline design features a collared neckline and a row of contrasting buttons for a sophisticated look, while two side pockets add a practical finishing touch.
Thanks to its versatile design, the coat can be paired with virtually any outfit. Dress it down with jeans and a cosy knit jumper for casual days, or team it with smart trousers and a blouse for office wear or occasions when you want to look particularly polished.

Of course, there are some differences between Marks & Spencer’s and Burberry’s trench coats. The £90 trench is made from 100% polyester, whereas Burberry’s coats are typically made from gabardine, which is a tightly woven waterproof fabric that’s usually made from wool or cashmere, which will feel more luxurious than polyester.
Meanwhile, Next’s Chocolate Brown Formal Funnel Neck Coat is available for £88. The coat features a funnel neck, a button-through fastening, and a belted waist, creating a smart and timeless silhouette that’s ideal for formal occasions. Alternatively, New Look’s Dark Brown Unlined Longline Belted Coat comes in at £59.99. Secured with a belt, the classic design is a brilliant choice for work, evening outings, or throwing on over your casual outfit for an effortless touch.
Back at Marks and Spencer, the Checked Coat boasts an overall star rating of 4.5 out of five based on almost two dozen reviews. One satisfied shopper said: “Lovely coat, warm, stylish and comfortable. Perfect smart coat for the winter.”
A second wrote: “This coat fits well, it’s fully lined and the fabric is soft and cosy. Perfect for cold winter days and a great value for money.
“I loved this coat as soon as I saw it,” a third penned. ” I ordered my normal size 16, which fits perfectly. So lovely and warm and very expensive-looking. Such a classy and stylish coat. Highly recommend.”
One customer, however, awarded the Checked Belted Longline Tailored Coat a three-star rating due to its ‘very heavy’ nature. They added: “Nice print, but would have preferred it in a trench style with more feminine shoulder tops. Love the pattern. I am a UK 14 and the 16 fitted perfectly.”
