More than nine million fans stayed up to watch England’s dramatic early hours victory over Mexico as it happened, the BBC confirmed.

Despite the delayed 2am kick-off, audience numbers peaked at 9.1 million on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. An average 7.8 million watched Jude Bellingham score twice before Harry Kane held his nerve to convert the decisive penalty and send England into the World Cup quarter-finals.
It was the biggest ever television audience for a live UK broadcast at that hour – between 2am and 4am. The historic audience was more than triple the previous overnight record set at that time which was during the Rio 2016 Olympics, when more than three million stayed awake to witness Mo Farah’s 10,000m gold medal triumph alongside Jessica Ennis-Hill’s and Greg Rutherford’s medal-winning performances.
The nail-biter also proved a bonanza for pubs, with jubilant England fans celebrated the team’s heroics with six million pints.
The total marked an extra 1.25 million compared with a normal Sunday, trade body the British Beer and Pub Association said. It came as the government extended pub licensing hours to 5am to allow fans to celebrate until dawn.
Emma McClarkin, BBPA chief executive, added: “Pubs will now be restocking their beer ahead of the next England-Norway match because as every football fan knows, there is no better place than to cheer on the Three Lions than down your local.”
According to analysis of pub and bar transactions by payment provider Dojo, extended licensing hours generated a 11% boost in spending for the England vs Mexico game.
Kate Nicholls, Chair of UKHospitality, said: “Even in the early hours, and with an unexpected delay to kick off, England fans turned out in huge numbers to cheer on the Three Lions and watch one of the best games of the tournament so far. Thanks to the urgent extension to licensing hours, a third of pubs chose to open their doors and the sector enjoyed an 11% spending boost as a result, showing the significant demand from fans.
“It will have provided a much-needed boost for those pubs showing the game and the entire sector will now be preparing for a super Saturday when England face Norway in the quarter final.”
Given the timing, millions opted to sleep through then catch up first thing Monday.
The BBC’s highlights of the game have been streamed a record 5.9 million times on iPlayer, its website and app, and on its YouTube channel.
BBC Sport had more than 330 million video views across its social platforms, the highest daily total in its history. More than 65 million of those came from Harry Kane’s viral post-match interview with BBC Sport’s Kelly Somers, in which the England captain had lost his voice after celebrating by singing the tournament’s unofficial anthem, Oasis’ Wonderwall.
The day’s second most-watched clip was pundits Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Joe Hart struggling to contain their laughter as they reacted to Kane’s memorable interview.
