A Staffordshire pub has been named the best in the UK for a record third time.

The Tamworth Tap has been crowned the Campaign for Real Ale’s National Pub of the Year again, having also taken the prize in 2022 and 2023.

The boozer was praised for being “the centre of its community” thanks to its range of daily events, and judges also applauded its courtyard beer terrace that comes with stunning views of Norman Castle.

Landlords George and Louise Greenaway said: “It’s not often either of us are stuck for words – ask anyone! – but we really are struggling to express how we feel today.

“When we won the first time we believed we’d reached the pinnacle of our achievements and were absolutely astounded with our second consecutive win. To have won for an unprecedented third time is beyond our wildest dreams; we are in awe of this recognition.“

Andrea Briers, CAMRA Pub of the Year Coordinator said: “What can you possibly say about this fantastic pub that hasn’t been said already?

“The local community are lucky to have an incredible pub with such dedicated staff on their doorstep. Please raise a pint, or three, to our triple champion!”

However, despite running a success business, landlord George Greenaway told the Mirror he faces £20,000 in extra costs this year.

He warned his pub – like other hospitality businesses – had been hit by an increase in the national living wage, soaring energy costs, and customers spending less. He said: “It has been a perfect storm for everybody.”

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is poised to unveiled a package of relief for pubs, thought to be worth about £300million, to help the sector cope with the end of pandemic-era support measures.
