Over two million Brits can access these savings including some who have retired
More than two million Brits could be missing out on big discounts – including many who have retired. The only catch is you must have worked in a certain job.
Education staff can access more than 1,500 deals covering food, fashion, travel, tech and days out through dedicated discount schemes, according to the Martin Lewis-founded consumer website, MoneySavingExpert. There is also a similar scheme for NHS staff with its own range of significant discounts across thousands of outlets across the country.
The consumer champion’s guide highlights savings ranging from 20% off restaurant bills to rail discounts and money off gym memberships. MoneySavingExpert’s full round-up is available here.
1,500+ offers – including for retired teachers
One of the biggest schemes is Discounts for Teachers, a free membership platform offering more than 1,500 deals. MoneySavingExpert says the scheme is open to teachers including retired, as well as teaching assistants, office staff, school cleaners and canteen workers.
To join, members must provide a work email address or proof of employment such as an ID card, recent payslip or P60 certificate.
Deals listed include:
- 20% off at Burger King
- 20% off TransPennine Express advance fares
- 15% off Go Ape
- 5% off Ikea online
There is no physical card, with offers accessed via the website or app. Former NHS staff can also sign up to Health Service Discounts, a sister platform which similarly remains open to retirees who previously worked in healthcare.
Blue Light Card
Teachers can also join the Blue Light Card, which historically covered NHS and emergency services workers but opened to teachers in August 2024 (excluding higher education).
It costs £4.99 for two years and gives access to 15,000+ high street and online discounts, including:
- 25% off at Pizza Hut
- 25% off at Beefeater
- 20% off at Wagamama
- 10% off at Starbucks
Codes must be generated via the app or website.
