Brits have been warned to brace themselves as the seemingly endless rain is due to turn to snow in some parts in the coming 24 hours – with some areas under 4 inches, the Met Office has said
Brits have been warned to brace themselves for freezing temperatures and snow as the mercury is set to plummet tomorrow bringing snow to parts of the country.
The news comes after many areas of the UK have been deluged by weeks of rain with one region suffering through rain for 37 straight days.
On Thursday, the Met Office announced that rain had fallen every day of 2026 in southwest England and southern Wales. Both have experienced a far wetter than average January, with 50% more rainfall than usual, the forecasters said.
Unfortunately this trend looks set to continue with forecasters warning that there is “no end in sight” to the downpours with more flooding on the cards for parts of Wales and the South West.
However in more northerly areas and over higher ground this precipitation is more likely to fall as snow, with residents in some parts buried under as much as 10cm of snow by the end of Wednesday, the Met Office has said.
The news comes amid two new yellow weather warnings which have been issued for Wednesday (February 11) covering the whole 24 hour period.
One warning covers western parts of Scotland, in the Strathclyde area, while the other covers a section further east over the Grampian mountains.
This period of heavy rainfall brings warnings of flooding and power cuts to residents with the Met Office also warning of travel disruptions.
Over higher ground the precipitation is forecast to fall as snow, with the Met Office weather warning saying: “As freezing levels lower from the north, snow is likely to fall above 300-400 metres, especially across Aberdeenshire, Angus and Perthshire, where 5-10 cm of snow may accumulate by the end of Wednesday.”
The general forecast also warns of snow for Scotland tonight with the rest of the UK potentially set to see the white stuff later in the week. The forecast for Thursday to Saturday reads: “Unsettled at first with further outbreaks of rain. Turning colder from Friday with a chance of snow showers, particularly in the north. Dry, cold and sunny for many on Saturday.”
Meanwhile the long range forecast shows no let-up in the wet weather, warning that “Atlantic frontal zones look to make a return” between Saturday February 14 and Monday February 23.
“The track of these depressions may be a little further north than over the preceding weeks, but will continue to bring broadly unsettled weather to many areas, with further spells of rain and perhaps strong winds at times.
“With the westerly influence, it should become somewhat milder for many, though there remains the chance that colder conditions could affect northern and north-eastern parts from time to time.”
