The Met Office says heavy rain is on the cards in some parts of the UK tomorrow despite heatwave temperatures surging as high as 35C this afternoon
Temperatures are expected to drop off tomorrow following scorching heatwave conditions today – and Met Office forecasters say heavy rain may impact some parts of the country too.
The mercury could reach 35C in the south-east of England this afternoon in what is the fourth heatwave of the year. However, the heat isn’t expected to be as widespread as during previous warm weather spells, with temperatures in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England in the high-teens to low-20s.
Conditions should cool off across the board tomorrow too. Temperatures in the mid to high-20s are expected in southern and south-eastern regions, where conditions could still feel warm in the sunshine, but most of the rest of the country will drop towards what can be expected for this time of year.
“The good news is, if you’re not a fan of the heat, that overall temperatures will come down into a slightly cooler day [tomorrow],” Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick said.
There could be some light showers in parts of England and Wales tomorrow, while rain might turn heavy over northern parts of the UK – particularly Scotland.
Ms Criswick went on: “Perhaps the odd shower in the south but still very light, and not much rain associated with these at all. Once again most of the showers will come across the north where they could still be heavy – and the odd one or two here or there across England and Wales.”
The Met Office forecast maps show heavy showers impacting 29 counties on Thursday. They are all in Scotland or Northern Ireland

BBC Weather forecast for Thursday
BBC Weather’s forecast suggests some of the showers over Scotland could turn thundery tomorrow. It states: “Tomorrow, northern areas will have showers, these heavy and thundery across the north of Scotland. Further south, a band of cloud and local drizzle will push south-eastwards, followed by sunshine.
“Sunshine for most in England and Wales Friday, but with some scattered showers across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Sunny spells again for most on Saturday, though Scotland may see isolated showers, mainly across the far north.
“Sunday will be mostly dry and sunny to start but cloud will build in for many later in the day. A few spots of light rain are possible in places.”
