Met Office forecasters say thunderstorms could impact some parts of the UK on Saturday as two weather fronts will bring rain to almost every part of the country

UK weather: Met Office forecasts return of damp conditions after drier period

Thunderstorms are on the cards tomorrow as two weather fronts sweep across the UK, according to the Met Office.

Rain is also expected in almost every region on Saturday. And to make the weather more miserable, some areas face unseasonably strong winds over the weekend.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin says “much of England” will face outbreaks of rain by dawn on Saturday. “It will be quite a soggy start, a grey, damp start, with outbreaks of rain slowly swinging their way across pretty much all areas,” he explained.

The north-east of Scotland could see some clear skies, and conditions “may brighten up at times for parts of the Midlands, Wales and southern England” too as the morning progresses. But, Mr Deakin explained another band of rain is then expected to move in behind the first.

This second weather front will bring “heavy showers” as well as an “increasing risk of thunderstorms”. Mr Deakin highlighted Northern Ireland and Wales as where the risk of thunderstorms is greatest.

Some drier conditions are on the cards in the south-west of England in the afternoon. However, the weather will remain “blustery” with unusually strong winds for this time of year.

Temperatures are expected to be close to or slightly below the average for June, varying from 15C in Northern Ireland, Wales and the south-west to 19C in the east of England. Southern regions will feel cooler due to the strong winds, he added.

BBC weather forecast for this weekend and beyond

The BBC’s forecast states: “Mostly cloudy tomorrow with rain continuing to push in from the south-west. Some sunny breaks and isolated thundery showers appearing later in the day, especially in the south. Windy in the south.

“Sunday will see variable cloud and showers, mainly in the west. These may become heavy at times. Areas further east may remain dry, though variable cloud can still be expected.

“Monday will see locally heavy rain move in from the west. Sunshine is expected once the rain clears. Tuesday will see a mixture of scattered thundery showers and sunny spells.”
