Met Office forecasters predict temperatures could reach the high 20s in multiple counties this weekend after days of heavy rain, fierce winds and thunderstorms
Brits battered by downpours, gusty winds and thunder this week have something to look forward to this weekend, with forecasters predicting a dramatic turnaround and temperatures soaring into the high 20s.
A shift is expected towards warmer and more settled conditions by Saturday (June 13) with parts of the country potentially basking in temperatures as high as 28C by Sunday, according to the Met Office.
A high pressure system is forecast to bring the drier skies according to the Met Office’s latest forecast, with a dozen counties set for temperatures reaching 25C or higher on Sunday, with southern and central areas expected to enjoy the warmest weather.
The north east is set to be slightly cooler with temperatures averaging in the early 20s, while Scotland is forecast for temperatures ranging between 15C and 20C
In the lead up to Saturday, much of the UK faces a mixed bag of weather. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to bring sunny spells interspersed with frequent showers, some of which could turn heavy with hail and thunder.
More widespread wet and windy weather is then forecast to sweep across the country on Thursday. Deputy Chief Meteorologist David Oliver said: “Over this weekend the weather will become drier and more settled as high pressure begins to build. It will turn warmer with temperatures above average for many.
“By Sunday, some parts of the south may reach 26 to 28C, although the exact values are still a little uncertain, there is potential for values to be either a little higher or lower than this.
“This warm spell is expected to persist into the start of next week, especially in the south. However, there remains some uncertainty how long the warm weather will last, as with any forecast at this time range, the details will become clearer over the coming days.”
