McDonald’s fans are shocked after finding out they can buy an axed cult favourite on the brand’s UK menu in a less commonly-known British supermarket. A food blogger shared the news in an Instagram reel
McDonald’s fans have been left gobsmacked after spotting an axed cult favourite on the UK menu in a British supermarket.
After being taken off the menu following a short return in 2024, customers have urged the fast food giant to bring the McRib back. It was a pork patty sandwich with barbecue sauce, pickles and onions on a bun.
It seems as though fans’ prayers have been answered after some savvy shoppers spotted the discontinued McDonald’s product at Company Shop, a retailer known for selling surplus stock from big brands. There are currently only 13 of these shops in the country and they are membership based stores where members can enjoy savings of up to 50 per cent on major brands.
The pork burgers were spotted in Company Shop by uknewestfoods on Instagram who shared a reel on the platform showing a freezer full of the frozen patties. In the clip you can see a 1kg bag of the ribs being sold for £2.50.
Although the caption of the Instagram post states “McDonald’s McRib at Company Shop”, there is no actual McDonald’s branding on the product. Instead, they are referred to as “legendary rib patties.”
The Instagram reel, uploaded four days ago (March 4), has garnered 105,000 views, 755 likes and nearly 50 comments so far. One impressed user said: “Twice the size of McDonald’s rib!”
Multiple interested users asked which shop the ribs were found in and one person asked for the pork percentage of the patties to which uknewestfoods replied “96.22%.” On the US McDonald’s website, the description of the pork burger reads: “The McRib starts with seasoned boneless pork dipped in a tangy BBQ sauce, topped with slivered onions and tangy pickles, all served on a toasted homestyle bun.
“When everything combines you have BBQ pork sandwich perfection. But its availability is limited—stay tuned at your local McDonald’s for when the McRib is available near you.”
The McRib returned to the UK menu in October 2024 for a limited time only after it was previously last on sale in 2015, the Mirror reported. It was first launched in 1981 but was discontinued four years later and has returned several times since then.
It was a clear fan-favourite as customers regularly called for it to come back after it was axed in 2015. When it made a brief return in October 2024, it was being sold for £4.49 on its own or £6.19 as part of a medium value extra meal.
Thomas O’Neill, Head of Menu at McDonald’s UK, at the time, told The Mirror: “It is more than just a sandwich; it’s a phenomenon. We have heard our fans loud and clear – the fan petitions and pleas on social – and after almost a decade of anticipation, we are thrilled to bring back this iconic menu item.
“Knowing how well-loved the McRib is, we had very little choice – we had to make it happen. It was time to step up and satisfy the cravings of McRib enthusiasts across the country.”
Those wanting to try out the Company Shop’s pork ribs will have to have a membership. The stores are open to working in specialised sectors such as policing, fire and rescue and the NHS, as well as those on means-tested benefits, like Universal Credit.
