Two flats were completely destroyed after a fire ripped through the buildings in Lambeth, London, which led to more than 20 people evacuated and four children were hospitalised
Four children have been rushed to hospital after a huge fire ripped through a block of city centre flats.
Emergency crews were scrambled to Barrington Road, near Loughborough Junction station, in Lambeth, London after the alarm was raised at 8.05am. Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade attended the blaze this morning.
Crews from across Brixton, Clapham and Peckham tackled the flames at the 11-storey building. Images showed large flames coming from the flats and thick black smoke billowing up into the sky.
Two flats on the fifth and sixth floors were completely destroyed by the flames with more than 20 residents forced to evacuate the building.
A statement from London Fire Brigade read: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Barrington Road in Lambeth.
“Firefighters tackled a fire at an 11-storey building, where a maisonette flat on the fifth and sixth floors was completely destroyed by fire. Over 20 people were evacuated from the building, four children were taken to hospital as a precaution.
“The Brigade’s Control Office took the first of 23 calls about the fire at 0805 and sent fire crews from Brixton, Clapham, Peckham, and other surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control at 0933. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
Meanwhile, the London Fire Brigade were also called this morning to a vehicle fire at Heathrow Airport which sparked chaos. People took to social media posting images of a car which they said was on fire at Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. One person wrote: “Good start to the day with a fire at Heathrow T5” alongside a clip of smoke rising from the major transport hub.
A Heathrow Airport spokesperson said: “Earlier this morning our teams responded to a vehicle fire on the Terminal 5 Departures forecourt. The fire was extinguished quickly and there were no injuries. The airport is now operating as usual”.
