Some may wonder if more expensive Christmas crackers are worth the extra money spent. This is what one man wanted to find out as he bought a set of £1000 Christmas crackers from Fortnum & Mason
A man was left gobsmacked after spending £1000 on a packet of six Christmas crackers as he was left floored by the contents inside. For many Brits, pulling Christmas crackers is a must-do tradition around the dinner table.
Wrapped in festive paper, each cracker traditionally contain a colourful crown-shaped hat made of tissue paper, a small toy or trinket, and a strip of paper with a motto, a joke, a riddle or a piece of trivia written on it. Each person around the dinner table will participate and pull a cracker with the people around them to determine which prize they’ll get.
While most people will get their Christmas crackers in supermarkets or from high street brands, there are also more luxurious alternatives for those willing to spend a bit more. But are these crackers worth the extra cost?
This is what one man named Carmie Sellitto wanted to find out, as he headed to luxurious department store Fortnum & Mason to get his hand on the store’s Regal Crackers, which cost £1000 for a set of six. He then took to social media to share what he got in them.
“I just spent £1000 on some Christmas crackers, so let’s open them up and see what’s inside,” he said as he held up the Fortnum & Mason basket that contained the crackers in question.
As he opened the basket, he quickly noted how beautiful the crackers were, as each was wrapped in sparkly red paper with gold details on each end of the cracker, along with red satin bows to finish it off. Carmie then got help from a person behind the camera to pull the first cracker to see what was inside.
He noted the first item “looked promising” as it was wrapped carefully in tissue paper; however, he was then left confused as he unwrapped his silver-plated tea caddy tin, claiming it was “dirty” when the silver was simply tarnished.
Despite this, he was left impressed by the accompanying crown hat, which was made in golden fabric and could be tied around one’s head. He continued with the second cracker, which along with a matching crown came with a silver-coloured tea strainer, which he claimed also looked “dirty”, while they were actually tarnished.
“I’m starting to think the Royal family had used these and they’re actually their hand-me-downs,” he said. Clearly not impressed, he pulled open the third cracker, which had a honey “drizzler” wrapped inside the white tissue paper.
He then moved on to the fourth cracker, which he noted was already slightly ripped where it gets pulled apart. Nevertheless, he pulled it open to unwrap a silver-plated caddy spoon.
“What am I meant to do with this? Eat my shredded wheat with this spoon?” he wondered. Continuing with the second to last cracker, he unwrapped a pair of cheese mice markers, with Carmie referring to them as “mice earrings”.
“It’s almost like they are laughing at me,” Carmie said as he held the mice up to the camera to show viewers. He then went on to the last cracker which, along with the golden hat and motto card that every other cracker had contained, also came with the surprise of a spoon rest.
“I’m going to be honest, there’s absolutely nothing in this that I want to take home with me,” Carmie said, referring to the basket of crackers. “The coolest things inside these crackers were the hats.”
