A murder investigation is underway after a man died following a suspected assault.
Emergency services were called to an alleyway between Dale Street and Arthur Terrace in New Marske, North Yorkshire, shortly after 8pm on Friday after a man sustained serious injuries in a suspected attack.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene just over an hour later, Cleveland Police said. A 37-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.
A force spokesperson said the man’s next of kin have been informed and that extensive enquiries into the circumstances surrounding his death are underway. Formal identification of the victim will take place in due course.
“While we understand this incident will have caused concern in the local community, at this stage we believe it to be an isolated and targeted event,” the spokesperson said.

A blue forensic tent was erected in the alleyway and crime scene investigators in white hazmat suits arrived on Saturday afternoon, Teeside Live reports.
The North East Ambulance Service previously confirmed that two double-crewed ambulances, a specialist paramedic and a clinical team leader attended the incident, supported by the Great North Air Ambulance medical car.
Cleveland Police said officers will remain in the area to progress enquiries and provide reassurance to residents. “As enquiries are in their very early stages, we would urge people not to speculate or comment online,” the force spokesperson added.
