A much-loved homeware retailer is set to close a London outlet within days as part of 23 UK closures.
Topps Tiles has slashed prices at its Cheam store ahead of its final day on August 7, as it looks to make savings across the board with a broader closure programme.
Locals have reported “everything must go” signs popping up in the windows of the popular branch, which was praised as “great” with “helpful” staff. This closure forms part of a wider list of 23 due to shut this year.
In April, the brand confirmed it would close an additional 15 stores this year, on top of eight previously announced, representing 7% of its estate.
Topps Tiles chief executive Alex Jensen stated the closures were being implemented to “support year-on-year growth and provide a stronger financial platform for 2027 and beyond”, reports the Express.
He said: “In light of subdued consumer sentiment and geopolitical uncertainty, as well as the cumulative impact of cost inflation, the management team is implementing a targeted programme of self-help measures weighted towards the second half.”
In April the company said the stores that have been selected for closure are under-performing with all those due to shut, closing their doors before the end of October.
The retailer has not disclosed which sites will be closed. Topps Tiles said the closures would help slash costs as part of “significant self-help measures”.
The group, headquartered in Enderby, Leicestershire, revealed sales dipped 0.1% to £142.7million in the six months to March 28, with revenues hit by a “lengthy” competition process and disposal programme following its acquisition of rival CTD Tiles in 2024.
It had purchased competitor CTD out of administration in 2024, but a Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigation compelled Topps Tiles to offload several branches due to competition worries. The firm also acquired rival Fired Earth out of administration in December 2025 for £3million.
Numerous major retailers have downsized their high street presence over the past few years, with stalwarts like WHSmith concentrating on airports and travel locations rather than the high street.
Major banks, such as Santander and Lloyds, have also closed physical locations as customers shift towards online banking.
