The gas outage in Salcombe, Kinsbridge and Malborough comes as the UK was plunged into a deep freeze with all parts of England being issued with an amber health alert as temperatures drop to freezing
A gas outage has plunged homes into a deep freeze “for a few days” after a pipe was damaged by a third party.
Properties across Devon were left without gas after a pipe appeared to have been damaged, though it is not believed to have been done deliberately. The outage affects homes in Salcombe, Kinsbridge and Malborough where temperatures are expected to plummet to freezing overnight.
It comes as an amber cold-health alert remains in place for Devon and all other regions of England amid frosty temperatures. Decon County Council warned locals to take care when traveling as paths and roads could be frozen over.
Gas operator Wales and West Utilities (WWU) said it was unaware of the number of affected properties. A spokesperson added people who know vulnerable people in the properties should check on them amid the outage.

“Our engineers are on site and have started repairs, but this is a challenging job, and customers should prepare for supplies being interrupted for a few days,” WWU said. “We’re working hard to support customers on the Priority Services Register with alternative cooking and heating facilities.
“If you know someone vulnerable, please check in on them until we reach them. We’re also liaising with local council to see what additional support can be provided for residents and we will keep you informed as repairs continue.”
While engineers are carrying out repairs though that means little to businesses that have been forced to close over the weekend due to the outage saying nothing of families enduring the chill. The Maha-Bharat curry house said apologised for the inconvenience .
“Unfortunately, we are closed today due to a gas issue affecting Kingsbridge, Salcombe, and Marlborough,” the curry house said, as reports DevonLive. “For those who placed an online order, refunds have already been issued.
“If you experience any issues or have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused, this is just as disappointing for us as it is for you.”
