The clockwise stretch of the M25 between junctions 3 for Swanley and 4 for Orpington in Kent was closed overnight owing to a serious incident, which has caused problems today
Motorists planning on using Britain’s busiest motorway have been warned of long delays after an earlier horror crash overnight in which a man was killed.
The incident happened on the M25 last night at around 10pm when a silver BMW Z4 left the road before returning to a full stop on the carriageway, when it was hit by a blue Nissan Note. The driver of the BMW, a man in his 30s, died in the incident, which has continued to cause havoc this morning. National Highways warned drivers in the area to “expect delays” owing to the closure of the clockwise lane between junctions 3 for Swanley and junction 4 for Orpington in Kent.
Kent Police said in a statement: “Witnesses and dashcam footage are sought by officers investigating a fatal collision on the M25 near Orpington. The incident happened on the clockwise carriageway between junctions 3 and 4, at around 9.55pm on Friday 21 March 2025.
“A silver BMW Z4 was being driven towards Sevenoaks when it is reported to have left the motorway on the nearside before returning to stop on the carriageway. The vehicle was then involved in a collision with a blue Nissan Note that had been travelling in the same direction.
“Emergency services attended the scene where the driver of the BMW, a man in his 30s, was confirmed to be deceased. His next of kin has been informed.”
Although the road has now reopened, drivers have been told of long delays in the area as today goes on. National Highways said on X: “All lanes have now reopened in both directions on the M25 between J3 And J4. Please allow extra journey time for the remaining residual delays on approach to clear – thank you for your patience.”
Last night, it posted: “The M25 in Kent is closed clockwise J3 Swanley to J4 BadgersMount (#A21). This is due to a serious collision.
“All emergency services are on scene and road will remain closed throughout the night Traffic caught within the closure will be turned in due course. National Highways traffic officers are en route to to start turning traffic caught within the closure.
