Andoni Iraola has succeeded Arne Slot as manager of Liverpool, with the ex-Bournemouth boss having established himself as one of Europe’s most in-demand head coaches
Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Andoni Iraola as their new manager. Iraola, 43, has replaced Arne Slot in the Anfield dugout, signing a two-year contract.
The Spaniard moves to Merseyside after three impressive seasons at Bournemouth, who attempted to tie him down to a new long-term contract. Iraola ended his reign on the south coast by guiding Bournemouth to sixth place, their highest ever top-flight finish which earned them a spot in next season’s Europa League.
Shortly after Liverpool announced that they’d sack Slot on Saturday following a dismal second season, Iraola was installed as the red-hot favourite to replace him. The former Rayo Vallecano boss’ representatives held talks with Crystal Palace as well as German side Bayer Leverkusen prior to confirmation of Slot’s departure.
Iraola’s dynamic and aggressive brand of football promises to appeal to the Liverpool fan base, who grew content with Slot’s style of play. A large portion of supporters called for his sacking during the Reds’ failed Premier League title defence which saw them finish just three points above Bournemouth.

The Liverpool hierarchy had intended to stick with Slot after they narrowly qualified for the Champions League, but their plans changed drastically following a forensic end-of-season review. Iraola will now take the reins ahead of pre-season.
Liverpool’s owners said in a statement announcing Slot’s exit that they believe ‘the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction’. Iraola will do well to match Slot’s achievement in his first season, as Liverpool won their 20th English title.

“(The change) does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him,” the statement added. “Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”
