Clarol’s Silver Serum contains an anti-bacterial ingredient, Microsilver, that kills bad bacteria and helps banish blemishes

Battling acne during our teenage years is bad enough, but when it follows us into adulthood, it can be a real confidence sapper. But one shopper, who has tried countless solutions from medication to creams, is praising a £16 Amazon buy that has ‘worked when all else failed’.

Sharing how use of the formula meant she ‘could actually risk going out without wearing heavy concealer or foundation to hide spots and blemishes’ for the ‘first time’, the product in question is Clarol’s Silver Serum. Reportedly the ‘first ‘smart’ anti-bacterial solution for acne, oily skin, redness, scars, and sensitive skin’, the dermatologist-and makeup-artist-approved skincare product costs £16.45 on Amazon for a 50ml tube.

The Silver Serum’s hero ingredient is patented microsilver that reportedly targets bad bacteria while preserving the good. With results spotted in a matter of days for some users, the cream is said to hydrate without causing dryness or irritation with 70% of participants in a study completed by the brand seeing a reduction in acne.

While the cream has been known to work wonders for teens struggling with spots, it has been a lifeline for some users with adult acne, too. For those unsure of the difference, consultant dermatologist Dr Eva Melegh explains: “Adult acne is often formed as clumps of smaller puss-y or bumpy spots under the surface rather than individual larger blackheads or pustules as with teen acne and is also often accompanied by a bumpy and red complexion that is more sensitive and drier.”

She added: “Adult acne is often less severe and can be dramatically improved with targeted skincare treatments, but it’s no use trying to use acne products aimed at teen skin on adult breakouts as the results won’t necessarily be the same.”

There can be many reasons for an acne breakout, from over-exercising (which can create an excess of sebum, which in turn causes a build-up of oil and dead skin cells in hair follicle pores) to crash dieting, thanks to hormonal imbalances.

Dr Melegh added: “Sebum is very important for adult skin as it’s more prone to dryness and damage, and sebum is the skin’s natural moisturiser, so adults need all the sebum they can get. So even if you have adult acne, you should avoid products that claim to inhibit sebum production. These might be OK for oily teen skin, but they are not ideal for adult skin.

“A better option for controlling adult acne while making sure skin doesn’t become dry and flaky is to let sebum flow freely but use a product that helps purify sebum so that it does not oxidise on the skin’s surface, which can then lead to pore blockages and spots.”

While the Silver Serum is loved for helping control and banish this, another product she highlighted is the Clarol Sebopure, £16.45. It ‘is a unique product that contains a natural sebum preserver that helps keep sebum uncontaminated as it reaches the skin’s surface,’ Dr Melegh remarks, “allowing it to pass out through the skin pore without pooling and contaminating”.

Although the Clarol Silver Serum, used twice daily, works over time to calm skin down, transforming irritated, raised, scarred and painful skin to be smoother, clearer and less inflamed. The cream also works as a preventative method too as consistent use, reportedly, helps prevent new breakouts, manage emerging acne, and maintain a clearer, smoother complexion. The brand says: “Skin feels calmer, less congested, and more balanced, promoting confidence in your natural appearance.”

If this particular formula hasn’t generated the desired results, there is a range of alternative blemish-clearing options on the skincare market, such as BYOMA’s Blemish Clearing Paste, which costs £9.99 from Boots. Infused with Salicylic acid, Kaolin Clay, Camphor, Kojic Acid and Cica, it works to unclog pores, pull out impurities, soothe skin and is sensitive-skin friendly.

Elsewhere, The Inkey List’s 360 Skin Clearing Serum, £16, is another budget-friendly option that combines hyaluronic acid, Panthenol and salicylic acid to help calm redness and minimise excess oil, while smoothing out post-blemish marks.

Although shoppers who have tried out the Clarol Silver Serum have been left in awe of the results, with one user – who shared how she experienced acne for 45 years – stating it ‘worked when all else failed’.

She said: “I can’t praise Clarol Silver Serum enough. Worth trying and being patient for a few weeks as it starts to work. After 45 years of suffering with teenage and then adult acne, trying various lotions, tablets, over the counter creams and some expensive products as well as those prescribed by my GP….and even seeing a dermatologist, I’ve used the Silver Serum for two months, morning and night, and I can say that this is the first time (other than briefly on holiday after catching the sun) that I’ve gone out without something to conceal my bad skin…. and I am over 60.

“I started using the serum in May, and it took three weeks while the existing scars from painful lumps under my skin healed and then faded before I realised that no more were coming through and I could actually risk going out without wearing heavy concealer or foundation to hide spots and blemishes.

“I’ve had one small breakout on my chin in the two months, but it soon cleared up and was nothing like as angry or sore as previously. The serum seems so gentle, and yet it is the only effective cream I’ve used. A revelation! Wish I’d discovered it years ago. Normally, I carry concealer everywhere, but now I don’t need to.”

Another user shared the praise and said: “I have suffered with adult acne for the past two years and I have had countless creams, gels and antibiotics from the doctor that do not help. I’m wearing make-up to cover my skin (or trying to), which doesn’t help and only makes it worse, so it was a catch-22.

“I’m currently pregnant, so the doctor has told me there is nothing else I can take. Feeling self conscious I got to the point I would not leave the house due to everyone commenting on my face. One day I came across an article about this serum and although sceptical as I’ve tried absolutely everything on the market that claims to be good for acne but isn’t, I ordered this.“After two weeks, the difference in my skin is amazing. I still have the odd outbreak, but nothing near as bad as it was, and they don’t burn like they used to. Even people are commenting about how clear my face has got.”

Someone else noted: “I’ve tried many products (often costing a substantial amount of money!), and nothing has worked as well as Silver Serum. Within days, my skin had cleared up. Couldn’t be happier with the results.”

It’s important to mention that, as is the caveat with all skincare, this formula may not suit everyone, and for some people, the cream was slightly too greasy for their skin. One three-star review read: “I bought this to help with my acne after reading about ‘miracle’ results online. It worked OK for a while, but my face was very greasy. I found myself having to blot off excess grease on tissues during the day, and I’ve never been that oily.”

Another echoed: “I suffer from breakouts, I have combination skin. I found this product very oily, it made my skin break out more.”

Although for the most part, the comments have been overwhelmingly positive, with one shopper showcasing this in a glowing five-star review, which read: “Amazing product! Results are noticeable after the first few days of use, especially good for people who struggle with acne due to oily skin. For best results, I recommend applying a thin layer of cream twice a day, after waking up and before you go to sleep.

“After using this product for two months my skin is clear of any new spots and boils, there are some scars left from previous spots but this product keeps my skin at ease. When using this product, I did not use any other acne-fighting creams or soaps; I found that using other products did not help. This cream alone is brilliant.”
