Lidl has made a huge change to its loyalty app – and it means shoppers can get more discounts in stores.
The discount supermarket chain has added more personalised discounts to its Lidl Plus app. The change means shoppers can now access discounts available at their local store – under “your store” on the app – as well as “all stores.” Lidl already offers personalised discounts on its app using the data collected when shoppers scan it at the checkout.
Lidl told The Grocer Magazine that the change – which was launched this week – will give “greater visibility” to discounts specific to the shopper’s favoured store. The supermarket noted that this was particularly relevant for its “limited-time” lines, which include middle aisle items that may not be available in all stores at one time.
The Lidl Plus app launched back in 2020 and offers rewards each time it’s scanned at the checkout. Each week, customers also get new single-use personalised coupons to use on their next shop – with some discounts of up to 25% on selected products. The app also offers the occasional freebie to shoppers. Last year, Lidl also added non-personalised discounts for all users, on a weekly rotating list of products.
This month, Lidl opened four new supermarket stores in Canning Town, Preston, Walsall, and Wombourne. It also opened five upgraded stores in Blantyre, Cwmbran, Oldbrook, Wells, and West Ealing. These upgraded stores have bigger sales areas and modern amenities, which provide more space for shoppers and a much wider selection of products.
The latest store openings follow the supermarket’s ambitious move in December, when it opened ten new stores, including Bovey Tracey, Hemel Hempstead, and Ipswich. When it was announced, Richard Taylor, Chief Development Officer at Lidl GB, said: “As we begin the new year, we’re maintaining our momentum and opening nine state-of-the-art stores, delivering bigger and better shopping experiences to new communities and those we’ve proudly served for an average of 26 years.
“After a record-breaking Christmas, where millions of households turned to Lidl, these openings reflect the growing demand for our unbeatable value and quality. This is just the start – we’ve got more openings in the pipeline this year alone and can’t wait to welcome even more customers, both loyal and new, through our doors in the weeks ahead.”
