Legally Blonde The Musical had to be stopped as ambulance and fire crews responded to an emergency at the Theatre Royal in the town. Emergency services were called to the scene of a medical episode during a matinee performance at the venue on Wednesday.
A member of the audience reportedly suffered seizures and the performance was halted as crews responded, with the person safely removed from the building.
At the time of the incident, a witness told PlymouthLive there was a large emergency service response outside the Theatre Royal. Pictures taken at the scene showed at least three ambulances and a fire engine.
The performance “was able to resume” following the incident and the theatre has thanked “the audience, cast, crew, and emergency responders for their calm and considerate response”.
A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “We assisted the ambulance service in safely removing a person experiencing seizures from the building.”
A spokesperson for Theatre Royal Plymouth said: “During the matinee performance of Legally Blonde The Musical today (3 June 2026), a member of the audience experienced a medical emergency. The situation was promptly attended to by the emergency services and theatre staff, and the performance was able to resume.”
Many people have taken to social media to praise the work of the emergency services and the response by theatre staff, saying that there was more than one stoppage.
One person wrote on Facebook: “Have to say well done to the staff at the theatre royal today. They were amazing looking after everyone at both medical incidents. Also how incredible the Legally Blonde cast and crew were to start back up their performance after having to stop twice. They were amazing.”
Another person stated: “The staff at Theatre Royal Plymouth handled both medical incidents brilliantly. True professionals. They definitely cared for the two people and also kept the rest of us updated.
“It was nice to speak to some new people about all things theatre during the stoppages though. Really impressed with how the cast and crew picked themselves back up after both stoppages. I pray both of them will be OK.”
While a further agreed: “The Staff were amazing today at Theatre Royal Plymouth, I take my hat off to them, they have had a hard afternoon and was very professional at all times.
“Also the nurses that were watching the show jumping up to help until ambulance teams turned up. The show was fantastic as well, all the performers were great, stopped the show until all sorted. Thank you Theatre Royal Plymouth.”
