EDF Energy is running its Sunday Saver Challenge this month
EDF is reviving its ‘Sunday Saver Challenge’ this October, offering Brits free electricity on Sundays throughout the coming month. However, if you’re keen to get involved, you’ll need to act fast as the deadline for signing up is rapidly approaching.
The energy company’s scheme rewards eligible customers who shift their daily electricity use away from peak times, which are between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays. By moving more of their power consumption to less busy periods, participants can earn extra free electricity on the following Sunday.
The energy provider has said that this complimentary usage could vary from four to 16 hours during the day. Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, also stated: “With the new price cap level coming into effect seeing the average annual energy bill rising by two per cent from October 1 we’re continuing to provide great value through our Sunday Saver challenge.
“It’s fantastic to see how many customers are earning up to 16 hours of free electricity, especially in regions like the North East of England and Scotland. We’re excited to give even more customers the chance to save money and enjoy doing the things they love on a Sunday this October.”
EDF’s scheme comes as millions brace themselves for soaring energy costs this winter, with Ofgem’s price cap set to rise by two per cent from 1 October to 31 December. This will see a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit fork out £1,755 annually, reports Lancs Live.
Since the Sunday Saver Challenge was launched last September, some 88 per cent of participants across the country have bagged at least four hours of free electricity. EDF has also revealed that over £2.73 million has been refunded to customers’ accounts.
Last year, the North East of England took the crown as the region with the highest flex participation, with an impressive 89.39 per cent of customers successfully scoring up to 16 hours of free electricity. The Midlands were hot on their heels at 88.76 per cent, with Scotland taking third place at 88.45 per cent.
Those eager to join in this year will need a working smart meter for their electricity supply and must agree to half-hourly meter readings. Registrations for the challenge kicked off in late September and will wrap up tomorrow on Sunday, 12 October, at 11:59 pm.
The Sunday Saver Challenge will then officially kick off the following day on Monday, 13 October. EDF has announced the Sundays when customers can use their banked free electricity include:.
EDF’s website provides further guidance, stating: “You should be able to earn free electricity quite easily by making small changes to your energy habits. For instance, everyone in the house can charge up their devices outside of peak times; you can put the dishwasher on in the morning; or do a bit of batch cooking at the weekend.
“Go to Energy Hub in MyAccount to see when you use most electricity. Here, you can also keep track of your carbon savings and free electricity. We know changing habits can be tricky, but we hope you’re up for the challenge!”.
