Mum-of-two Claire Laybourne, 39, tragically died after Ryan Scott, 28, exceeded speeds of 100mph and crashed into her while she drove home from a Christmas theatre trip last year

A man drove at speeds of more than 100mph and smashed his car into a “beautiful” mum, killing her before fleeing the scene on foot.

Ryan Scott hit Claire Laybourne, 39, while she drove home from a Christmas theatre trip in December last year. Emergency services fought to save the mum-of-two at the scene of the collision in Holystone, North Tyneside, but she tragically died in hospital the following day, having suffered serious injuries.

Scott pleaded guilty to causing Claire’s death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving while unlicensed and uninsured. He also admitted causing serious injury to Claire’s mum, who was in the car at the time, by dangerous driving.

The 28-year-old was jailed for ten years following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court, where he was also banned from driving for 13 years and eight months.

Scott was found to be travelling at a speed of 112mph just five seconds before the collision, the court heard. His cars anti-lock braking system slowed him down to 90mph – still 20mph over the speed limit.

A witness told how the Skoda was moving through the rain at an “unbelievable speed” and that the crash sounded like a “bomb going off”. Prosecutor Glenn Gatland said Scott got out of the Skoda, ran away on foot and “never looked back”.

He was caught after Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Team and Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) launched an investigation into the crash.
