EXCLUSIVE: Gaie Delap is suing the MOJ after she was sent back to prison because officials couldn’t find her a wrist tag
A grandmother locked up for a green protest is suing the government, claiming she was falsely imprisoned.
Gaie Delap, 79, was sentenced to 20 months in jail for climbing gantries over the M25 to protest climate change. The Just Stop Oil activist was released to finish her sentence at home, but forced back behind bars when prison contractor Serco could not find a wrist tag to fit her. She could not wear an ankle monitor due to deep vein thrombosis. Delap, from Bristol, was among 16 people jailed for the M25 protest in November 2022.
The retired teacher, who is being represented by the Good Law Project, said: “When a state would rather lock up a grandmother than confront the crises we are protesting about, the justice system itself has failed.”
The Ministry of Justice said last year: “The prisons this government inherited are not working for most women.
“That’s why the Lord Chancellor has launched a new Women’s Justice Board to reduce the number of women in prison, and better support those who must still be imprisoned.”
