Former Premier League footballer Joey Barton, 43, and another man were charged with wounding with intent after a man was assaulted near a Merseyside golf course

Former footballer Joey Barton has been remanded in custody after appearing at Liverpool magistrates charged with assault following a fight at a golf club.

Barton wearing glasses, a blue top and white trousers, spoke only to confirm his name and address. Relatives of the two accused sat at the back of the court.

Barton had been arrested following the assault at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Sunday evening. Merseyside Police officers found a man with injuries to his face and ribs, who was later taken to hospital for further treatment.

The victim remains in hospital in a “serious but stable condition,” police added. Merseyside Police said in a statement: “We can confirm that two men have been charged following an assault in Huyton on Sunday night, 8 March.

At around 9pm, emergency services were called to Fairway to reports of a man having been assaulted near to Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

The victim was taken to hospital for assessment of serious injuries to his face and body. He is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Two men were arrested. Detectives have now charged the following men with Section 18 wounding with intent: Joseph Anthony Barton, 43, of Fox Bank Close, Widnes. Gary O’Grady, 50, of Seel Road, Huyton.
