A Jet2 flight from the Canary Islands to Manchester Airport was forced to declare an emergency after one of its pilots became incapacitated
A Jet2 flight was forced to declare an emergency over the UK after one of its pilots became incapacitated.
Flight LS980 took off from Lanzarote at 3.45pm WET on Tuesday and proceeded normally towards the UK until around 25 minutes before its scheduled arrival at Manchester Airport.
As it descended towards Manchester, the crew transmitted a Squawk 7700 – the international code for a general emergency – and informed Air Traffic Control (ATC) that one of the pilots was unable to continue their duties due to a sudden medical issue, AirLive reports. The Airbus A321 was given priority handling from ATC. and touched down safely at 8.14pm GMT.
The aircraft was parked on a stand where the affected pilot was reportedly met by medical professionals. The current condition of the pilot is not known. The Mirror has contacted Jet2 for comment.
It comes after the crew of a Delta flight issued a Squawk 7700 after a passenger suffered a medical emergency.
The Airbus A330 declared an emergency while flying over the UK and made a “heavyweight landing” at Dublin Airport in Ireland in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Delta Air Lines flight DL234 had departed from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport at 3.28pm EST on Monday.
The plane was about four hours into its ten-hour journey to Tel Aviv, Israel, when the crew transmitted a Squawk 7700 – the international code for a general emergency. The pilots requested an immediate diversion to Dublin after one of the 176 people on board experienced a “serious medical emergency”, according to AirLive.
The outlet reports that the plane made a heavyweight landing – when an aircraft lands at a weight exceeding its maximum landing weight – because it was still early in its flight and carrying a large amount of fuel for its journey from America to the Middle East.
