West Midlands Police said it is liaising with health and safety officials to establish the circumstances of the tragedy
An investigation has been launched after a man believed to be working on a construction site at a major city centre hospital fell and died.
Emergency services swarmed Birmingham Children’s Hospital on Friday (July 10) to reports a man had fallen from the building just before 10am.
It is reported the man was working on a construction site at the hospital, reports Birmingham Live.
The tragic incident came just a day after Prince Harry stopped by the hospital for a visit on his tour to the region in the year-countdown to the Invictus Games in the city next year.
Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust confirmed the tragic incident.
In a statement, it said: “There has been an incident at a construction site at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
“And our sympathies are with the family and friends of the individual involved. Support is being provided to those who have been affected.”
BSN Group Construction, where the man is believed to have been working, also issued a statement. A spokesman for the group said: “We are saddened to confirm that a person has died following an incident at our construction site at Birmingham Children’s Hospital on Friday, 10 July.
“Our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.
“We take health and safety very seriously, and we are assisting the police, the Health and Safety Executive and all relevant authorities with their enquiries.
“As investigations are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”
West Midlands Police said it is liaising with HSE as an investigation is launched.
“We were called to Birmingham Children’s Hospital after a man is understood to have fallen from the building at just before 9.50am today (10 July),” a spokesman for the force said.
“The man was sadly confirmed dead a short time later and our thoughts are with his loved ones.
“We are liaising with the Health & Safety Executive as enquiries continue.”
