A new National Audit Office (NAO) report has caused outrage after it revealed some members of the Royal Family were paying no rent while others were earning an income from subletting

King Charles could be spending more than £278,000 a year to cover the housing costs of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie at royal residences, according to estimates from a property valuer.

The daughters of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor are both non-working members of the Royal Family but continue to occupy homes within royal palaces rent-free, a newly published audit has revealed.

Beatrice has a property at St James’s Palace, while Princess Eugenie boasts Ivy Cottage within Kensington Palace. The cost of both residences is met through the Privy Purse, the King’s private income.

According to the audit, rents for Royal Household properties are typically set at around 60 per cent of open market rates because tenants must meet security clearance requirements. However, the report does not disclose the amounts being paid for the princesses’ homes.

The NAO also found that, for several years, the discounted rents charged for some royal properties were calculated using outdated market valuations. Here, we take a look at some of the homes mentioned throughout the report…
