Up and down the country, soaring energy bills are a massive concern for households. Amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, many people are looking for simple ways to save money and stick to tight budgets, particularly as we head into the cold winter months when it will be necessary to turn on our central heating systems to stay warm.
This expert-approved tip could save you an impressive £75 on your energy bills, and it’s so simple to implement in your home. The Eco Experts have recommended that swapping out your old light bulbs for LED bulbs could help you make huge savings on your energy bills, after conducting a survey that showed the increased cost of energy bills is encouraging over half of UK homes to introduce eco-friendly technology in attempt to cut costs.
“A single LED light bulb will save you £75 over the course of its lifetime,” explained Max Schwerdtfeger, so making the swap is well worth it, and couldn’t be easier. According to the Energy Saving Trust, lighting makes up about 15 percent of an average household’s electric bill, and LEDs use a lot less energy to run, so not only will they save you money, but they are also a more environmentally friendly alternative to halogen bulbs.
If every home in the UK made the switch, the Energy Saving Trust explains, carbon emissions in the UK would drop by 1.7 million tonnes every year. LEDs also last far longer than traditional bulbs, so you won’t be forking out for new ones anywhere near as regularly, and they are available in different hues, from cosy warm ones that are ideal for your bedroom to colder blue hues that people often prefer in their kitchens.
This isn’t the only swap that the Eco Experts recommend, they also advise that you opt for smart plugs – those that can be controlled remotely via the internet – over traditional ones, which will “alleviate the issue of vampire devices” Schwerdtfeger explains, and potentially save you money when an appliance isn’t in use.
The Eco Experts also recommend that you purchase draught excludes for your home, because this can help cut your heating bills. “A draft excluder could be anything from a door sausage placed at the bottom of a door frame, or tape that goes around door hinges. It’s really important to utilise draught excluders as we lose one-fifth of the heat our homes create through draughts,” Schwerdtfeger advised.
