Stacey works at a charity shop and she often shares all sorts of advice about thrifting; however, according to her, there’s a key mistake customers always make when shopping
Lots of people use charity shops as they’re full of bargains; however, recently, charity shop workers have started to speak out about mistakes people make when visiting the stores. Little you may know, people make all sorts of blunders when shopping and making donations, but one woman said there’s something in particular that really annoys her.
Stacey, known as Queen of Preloved on TikTok, recently revealed all in a tongue-in-cheek video. Even though the clip was light-hearted, she drew attention to an important fact, as so many thrifting customers ask one question that never fails to annoy members of staff.
It’s not the only charity shop tale to have emerged recently either. Weeks ago, it was claimed there’s a side to them that many people don’t get to see.
Over a clip of her at work, Stacey wrote: “When a customer asks if you ‘have this in another size’ and you work in a charity shop.” She’s then seen walking away as if to imply it’s a totally ridiculous question.
The video quickly got people talking, as others wanted to share their own personal experiences too. It seems it’s a question that gets on many people’s nerves.
One said: “My personal favourite is ‘excuse me, would you sell these shoes for £2 instead of £7?’ No thank you.”
Another added: “Yes it’s so funny, but sometimes we get a donation of new clothes from an outlet so we do have several sizes.”
A third replied: “Dumb and dumber!” Meanwhile, a fourth commented: “Yes, I managed a store for seven years. It was like ‘this top is a 14 and I’m an 18, could you do it cheaper?’ Eh no, because it won’t make it fit any better.”
It’s clear from the comments that people who work in charity shops have been asked all sorts of bizarre questions over the years. Perhaps this is why shoppers need to brush up their knowledge before going on a thrifting adventure.
What you need to know
Though it may sound obvious, charity shops generally do not sell the same clothes in different sizes. This is because they rely on individual donations, which means most items are one-of-a-kind.
Most of the time clothes are sold in whatever size they were originally made. There are times when there could be exceptions though.
For example, some charities receive overstock from major retailers or large donations of newer clothes from certain brands. In rare instances, this could mean the same item is available in a few different sizes.
There are also a few tricks you can use to try and boost your thrifting success. It’s often best to try clothes on before you buy due to potential shrinking or irregular sizing.
As well as this, some shoppers find it best to look through specific categories (e.g. all jackets, all jeans) as opposed to trying to hunt out a specific size-and-style match.
Also, it’s important to remember that stock constantly changes in charity shops. Visiting regularly boosts your chances of finding the items you’re really looking for.
