Derby woman, Lola Amuah visited a charity shop in Rutland where she discovered designer items by brands including Jimmy Choo, Gucci and Burberry – and she was amazed by the price tags
A woman who went charity shopping in a “rich” East Midlands town has expressed her amazement at the prices she encountered in one particular store. Many people love a bargain at a charity shop, however it was a different story for one shopper. Lola Amuah filmed herself making her way up the high street of Oakham in Rutland, where she spotted pairs of Jimmy Choo and Gucci shoes displayed in a shop window.
Accompanied by her husband Pete, she ventured inside the charity shop and swiftly picked out a Lanvin scarf – brand new with tags – for £18, followed by a DKNY handbag priced at £40. “There’s another one here – someone has donated them both,” Lola said in an Instagram video after discovering a similar DKNY item on the shelves.
Pete, meanwhile, stumbled upon a leather handbag carrying an £80 price tag. “What is it?” asked Lola curiously, before the pair eventually spotted the label — one neither of them recognised — Selva From Triad, made in Brazil.
“I’ve never heard of that,” admitted Lola, to which Pete responded: “Genuine leather, but it’s not the best. So to me it’s not like a full grain leather or anything like that.”
A Burberry silk scarf then caught Lola’s attention, locked away inside a glass cabinet and priced at £70, alongside a bracelet for £60.
The pair then made their way to the bric-a-brac section, where Lola picked up an Andy Pandy branded mug. Pete told her he’d previously spotted the same mug elsewhere for just 50p, yet here it was on sale for £10 – reduced from £15.
Speaking afterwards, Lola admitted: “Still don’t know what that bag was! Such a beautiful little town.”
One Instagram user criticised in response: “I’ll tell you what that bag was.. like the rest of the shop – overpriced. That’s why I don’t shop in rich towns… those were punchy prices.. 10 pounds for a mug. Ridiculous.”
A second commenter noted: “You were in my hometown. The place with the most expensive charity shops.”
A third remarked to Lola: “You missed the For Rutland Good and New clothing sale. An annual sale for charity Rutland Hall Hotel and those items were probably donated to the charity shop after the sale.”
Meanwhile, a fourth Instagram user observed: “It seems very overpriced I have a better and less expensive charity shops in London. DKNY is not desirable.”
Lola, who hails from Derby, featured on BBC’s Shift the Thrift earlier this year.
She told the Beeb of her charity shop exploits at the time: “It’s way more sustainable, it saves money and it helps support charities as well.
“The adrenaline rush is there, just finding the gems. Sometimes it’s because they’re super old or super rare.”
