One foodie decided to try out two different Hotel Chocolat £90 Easter eggs to see if they were worth it. The Ostrich eggs, which come in different varieties include more than a kilo of chocolate
Most people like to treat themselves or a loved one to an Easter egg when the season rolls around. However, many don’t want to waste their money on one that isn’t that great. To help with this, a lot of food influencers review Easter eggs before April comes around to try and help people decide which one to go for.
One such influencer is the ‘Grumpy Northern Foodie’ who boasts 155,000 followers on Instagram. In one of his latest reels, he decided to review two different Hotel Chocolat £90 Easter eggs to see if they were worth it. The foodie said he was trying to Ostrich Easter eggs from the brand, with the first one up the ‘Everything Easter Ostrich Egg’.
Talking about the egg, he said: “It’s over a kilo of chocolate, extra thick, heavily textured and packed with a selection of their most popular chocolates, pralines, tipsy truffles… the lot.”
The influencer said that the first half of the egg was dark chocolate, which he described as “very dark” and “proper bitter” – admitting it “won’t be for everyone”.
However, he contained: “That said, the flavour is good, the chocolate’s lovely and thick, it’s one of those where if you’re into dark chocolate, you’ll really enjoy it but it’s much an acquired taste.”
He said the chocolates inside the egg though are “spot on” though, and decided to give the egg an overall rating of 7/10.
The second half of the egg was a chunky biscuit-filled milk chocolate half, which he said was a “completely different vibe” as it had a “creamy texture, smooth chocolate and nice all-round flavour”.
The Grumpy Northern Foodie described it as “easy to eat and very accessible”. He said it was probably the “safer” choice for most people. He also said the chocolate inside it again were delicious.
Despite the praise, he said there was one issue with the egg – that it was “hard to justify” the £90 price tag. For this half of the egg, he awarded it a score of 8/10.
Next up to get the review treatment was the Patisserie Ostrich Egg, which is “aimed at dessert-lovers. One half off the egg is brownie-inspired, the other is cookies and cream and it’s paired with patisserie-style chocolates inside.
“This one’s going to be all about layers, textures and leaning into the dessert-style chocolate,” he said.
The foodie started by trying the brownie half. He said it was “good” and that you could “really taste brownie coming through”. He also described the chocolate as “creamy and rich” and said there was a “bit of extra luxury you’d expect at this level”.
He said the half of the egg “feels indulgent without being overpowering” and say it’s “easily the standout half so far”, as he gave it a score of 9/10.
Lastly, he sampled the cookies and cream half, which he admitted was “not quite as strong as the brownie half, but still enjoyable”.
He added: “You can taste the different chocolate flavours running through it, it’s nicely balanced overall.
“Might not hit as the brownie, but it’s still a solid half in its own right.”
He gave that half an 8/10.
Following up in the caption for the post – which racked up more than 3,900 likes – he wrote: “Would you pay £90 for an Easter egg?”
Many people said they would be put off the price, as one person wrote: “I wouldn’t, but if someone were to buy me one, I’d certainly enjoy it.”
Another added: “£90 egg better have 80 pound coins inside.”
While a third chimed in: “Or I could get 90(ish) 99p smaller Cadbury’s ones.”
However, some people were certainly tempted, as one person exclaimed: “I’ve been lucky enough to have a couple of these… delicious treat.”
Another added: “The chocolate is so thick, what a treat.”
