For many, the Christmas picky bits are even better than the main Christmas dinner – but which supermarket Christmas party foods are the best? That’s what one woman wanted to figure out in her test
A woman took it upon herself to try a large variety of Christmas party food items available from different UK supermarkets to determine which ones are worth spending your money on.
Becca Stock, 28, decided to compare food to help people find the best options for their budget – after being inspired by BBC’s Eat Well For Less. Taking to TikTok, where she has over 554,600 followers, she often makes videos trying the different food products, including festive treats, in order to find the best products. In a recent video, she went on to get 30 different party foods from UK supermarkets to find the best ones.
In her video, which has been viewed over 473,000 times in 22 hours, Becca went on to try all of the different Christmas party foods and rank them from worst to best.
“I’ve been to every supermarket and bought their best looking party food – let’s go through it and rate it from worst to best,” she said as she held up the various different food products.
At the bottom of her list, at spot thirty, were the Mini turkey and bacon pasties from Tesco, which she claimed didn’t taste like turkey but rather potato and stuffing, which earned them the low score of 2.5 out of 10.
Next up were Aldi’s Indian Inspired King Prawn selection box, including samosas, curry butterfly prawns, tikka torpedo prawn, which didn’t impress her either as she claimed they were all either dry or mushy, earning them the same low score of 2.5 out of 10.
Things slowly started to get better from here, with Tesco’s mini buttermilk chicken burgers scored a three, which was then followed by Co-op’s irresistible Mexican style pulled beef with smoky ketchup, which due to being ‘tasteless’ got a slightly better score of a three and a half out of ten.
“Oh, I hope these are good,” Becca said as she held up the Gruyere cheese and caramelized onion crostini from Co-op. However, she was soon left disappointed, claiming the overall ‘weird’ test only scored a four out of ten, leaving them on spot 26 out of 30.
In 25th place were M&S’s Patatas Bravas stacks, which Becca claimed just tasted ‘smoky’, which scored them a four out of ten. Tesco was then back again with the ir mini Philly cheese beef sliders, which didn’t impressed her when she first saw them, and neither was the flavour, which scored them a four and a half out of ten.
Asda’s bolognese arancini, salt and pepper spring rolls, and Co-op’s toads in the whole just about missed out on being part of the top 20, with the different dishes scoring five points each. Meanwhile, Aldi’s Japanese style chicken sliders became the 20th item on the list, scoring a five and a half after Becca claimed the flavour was ‘too plain’.
“Let’s move on to the Asda prawn toasties,” Becca then said as she held up one of the toasties before taking a bite. However, she soon revealed it was dry, which also scored it a five and a half out of ten.
Following along the sandwich theme, in place 18 was M&S’s extra mature barber’s cheddar and ham scones, which she claimed also were a bit dry despite the amount of melted cheese in it, leaving them with another score of five and a half.
Next up was another king prawn collection which now came from Sainsbury’s, and included a sesame topped prawn baguette, prawns in coconut batter, and filo prawns, which all tasted nice enough to earn a score of six out of ten. Asda’s French brie bites went on to score a six and a half out of ten, along with their onion bhaji dippers, while Waitrose’s mini garlic chicken kyivs got the first seven, earning them the 14th spot.
In spot 13 was Sainsbury’s chicken tikka samosas, to which Becca claimed the filling could do with more spices, but also gave them a score of seven, while Co-op melt in the middle fish cakes earned an impressive seven and a half out of ten. In spot 11 were Waitrose’s Katsu spring rolls, also scoring seven and a half due to its nice curry flavour.
Top ten best Christmas party foods
Starting the top ten, Becca tried M&S maple and bacon pancake stacks, which she had a nice balance of sweetness and smokiness in its flavour, which also earned them seven and a half.
“This is Asda’s mini festive feast toasties,” Becca said for spot nine as she took a bite from the toastie bite. “This is a pretty good toastie. […] I’m gonna give that an eight out of ten.”
M&S butter chicken mini naans earned spot number eight, with a score of eight out of ten, along with Co-op’s vegetable buns in spot seven with the same score. Aldi’s katsu spring rolls were next, which she claimed were the best supermarket spring rolls she’d ever tried, which boosted the score to a nine out of ten.
Spot five went to Waitrose’s mini beef burgers, which she stated was ‘a bloody good burger’, which also earned it a nine out of ten, along with Waitrose’s cheese and bacon tartlets in spot four. Just about making the top three was Waitrose’s satay chicken skewers, which Becca said tasted like it came from a restaurant, which got a nine and a half out of ten.
For the top two, Waitrose’s bacon carbonara cups earned the second place, which left Becca exclaiming: “This is such a good idea!”
She showed that the cup had chopped up pieces of spaghetti mixed in with the creamy sauce that were all wrapped in bacon. Clearly impressed, Becca gave them a score of a nine and a half out of ten.
But the title of the best Christmas party food went to Aldi’s mini barber cheddar and ham scones, which Becca said had the perfect balance between the cheese and butter, earning the perfect score of ten out of ten.
She then said: “I will not cook these for my Christmas party, I will just be eating these.”
