The downside of having in-between hair, not straight but also not tight curls, is a half-wavy, half-frizzy mop that inevitably triples in size in any humidity. Without ever having a multi-styler tool, the Shark FlexStyle has fully converted me and left my Revlon hot brush dusty on the shelf.

The multi-tool makes styling tricky hair a lot easier. With multiple attachments in one, it’s been a lifesaver for someone with hair like mine. Usually, I need to use a hairdryer, straightener, and then curlers to get my unruly mop resembling (along the lines) of a salon-ready look – but this does it all in one for me and cuts the hassle.

There’s the powerful hair dryer with concentrator attachment, Coanda Auto Wrap curlers for a bouncy look, the oval brush for soft volume and the Frizz Fighter Finishing tool. While I’ve been testing out this Dyson alternative, there’s one attachment that I’d buy the tool alone for.

The Oval brush. This is what takes my hair from a wavy, frizzy, and poofy mess to sleek, and full of bounce. Not to mention that the heat damage compared to my usual hair straightener and roller set-up has dramatically reduced.

The oval brush helps reduce frizz – in each frame of the video above, it does get gradually less, thanks to its mix of synthetic and natural bristles. Out of all attachments that come with the FlexStyle, this is the best for a smooth finish.

How I get a voluminous blow-dry with the Shark Flex Style

Another standout result is the added bounce it gives, not a poofy look that can easily happen for me when simply blow-dried. To achieve the volume, I start off by drying my hair damp, so that it has enough grip to style and create volume with the brush.

Then I go straight into the bottom section of my hair, continuing to dry it but with the added volume of the brush – this helps straighten my wavy hair and cut the frizz.

Going in an upwards motion with tension (more than you may think initially) does create a better bounce. Once the bottom is dry and lightly styled, I then flip it around and go from the top sections of my hair, brushing upwards, finishing drying, and setting small sections in rollers.

All in all, it takes less than 20 minutes (including the time setting in rollers) a fraction of other hair stylers I’ve tried before. Including the Revlon Hotbrush. Considering Revlon’s much lower £37.40 price, it is decent for a budget alternative; however, it does take a lot longer, it’s not as nimble, and there’s the question of heat.

Speaking of heat, when using the SharkFlex Style I prep my hair with the BeautyWorks 10-in-1 Miracle Spray. I use this product every day on my hair, but it doubles up as a heat protectant too – as well as being conditioning for frizzy hair like mine, it also helps detangle and aid in eliminating frizz.

Dyson and Shark’s multi-tools have long been rivals, as both use Coanda technology to style hair with air but with minimal heat damage. Dyson’s newest airwrap i.d. is currently on sale, cut down to £399 from £479.99 – making it £80 cheaper.
