Going out is expensive enough, so this perk is very handy
There’s nothing worse than heading into the weekend or holiday season with no plans while everyone else is seemingly busy.
However, with parts of the UK set for “stay under the duvet and close the blinds” kinda weather, there’s one perfect way to dodge the rain while still doing something fun – and it won’t cost you a thing, kind of. I’m talking about a cinema trip where you don’t need to pay for a ticket.
Spending my own money, I signed up for Monzo Perks just before Christmas so I’ve had a fair few months of it now. I wasn’t sure whether I should and I put off signing up for a while, but my partner said it was a good idea given its advantages. And he was right, as it does pay for itself in a way, and I’m saving money while also getting treats – it’s a win-win.
Why did I get Monzo Perks?
I’ve got the cutest dog who follows me everywhere, but sometimes I need to get out of the house and switch off for a bit (I still love him though). But one of the many benefits of the Monzo Perks account – which costs £7 a month – is a free cinema ticket.
If I booked a cinema trip now without using my monthly discount code, it would usually cost between £7.99 and £10.99. With the code, I also get 10% off food and drink – so I’m already saving money.
In addition to a free cinema ticket and the 10% discount, I get the following perks.
Includes everything from Free, Extra, plus:
- 3.25% AER (variable) interest on Instant Access savings, paid monthly
- 3.65% AER (variable)* interest on Select Access savings, paid monthly
- Fee-free withdrawals up to £600
- 3 fee-free cash deposits
- Discounted investment fees
- Annual Railcard
- Weekly Greggs treat
- Monthly cinema ticket at Vue
- Annual Uber One Membership
The only downside is that if you don’t live near a Vue Cinema, the cinema perk might not be worth it. For those who do, it’s great, but otherwise it could be more hassle than it’s worth, especially if you don’t drive.

Do I think Monzo Perks is worth it?
If I’m being totally honest, at the start, I wasn’t convinced at all. I work from home and don’t have time to visit a Greggs. But I am actually glad I have it.
While it’s £7 that’s not in my pocket at a time when the cost of living is high, and bills keep rising (and rising), it forces me to get out and have time away from the house, dog, and other life stresses to make time for me.
I’ve definitely got my money’s worth from it, especially with the Uber One membership, the annual Railcard, and the Greggs treats being right at the top of my list.
It’s also pushed me to go to the cinema more, which I probably wouldn’t do otherwise if I didn’t have a free ticket just sitting there ready for me to use. Recently, I’ve used it to watch films like Project Hail Mary and Scream 7, which I likely would have skipped or sighed as I watched more money leave my account upon booking.
Oh, and if you’re wondering, both are very much worth seeing. I will happily admit I bawled my eyes out during Project Hail Mary. Thanks, Rocky (no spoilers!).
Next up, we’re thinking of heading to see The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Something fun and light-hearted!
In fact, there are so many films I’m keen to see this year with Michael, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Dune: Part Three, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, all at the top of my list.
So, between a free movie each month, a Greggs treat (may as well grab before the cinema), Uber One, an annual Railcard and a 3.25% AER (variable) interest on Instant Access savings, paid monthly, and more, it’s a solid choice.
So while it’s not technically free since you’re paying £7 a month, if you’re already using it for the other perks, it still feels like a freebie waiting to be used. And if you need an annual Railcard or currently enjoy a monthly trip to Vue Cinemas, you’re not spending more – you’re actually spending less.
My next cinema trip plan? Pick up my free Greggs treat (sweet treat for the win), head to the cinema and relax for a few hours knowing the only thing I’ve paid for that day is my train ticket. An inexpensive day out that keeps me busy, lets me see the latest films and all while having fun.
