EXCLUSIVE: We discovered an elegant setting, great food and plenty to do for all the family on a weekend trip to this stately home spa hotel in Cheshire
Crewe Hall Hotel & Spa is situated just outside the town of Crewe, but it very much feels like you’re out in the countryside. Driving up the road that leads to the hotel is like arriving at a stately home in a Merchant Ivory film – it’s a breathtaking building with a regal ambiance.
The site of the mansion dates back to 1170. It was rebuilt in the 17th Century and restored and extended in the 19th Century. Alongside the elegant old hall is a modern section of the hotel, which contains further bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, event spaces, plus the health club, spa and swimming pool.
The food at Crewe Hall Hotel & Spa
Crewe doesn’t have the best reputation as a holiday destination since it’s often dismissed as essentially being all about its train station, but Crewe Market Hall is a delightful little enclave of food stalls and bars. Whether you prefer pasta, burgers, noodles or Olive’s Cypriot Food, plenty of tastes are catered for – including those who would prefer a liquid lunch of gin or rum.
For your evening meal, look no further than the atmospheric Brasserie Bar and Restaurant, a large, buzzing eatery within the hotel. It’s sophisticated enough to feel special, but also sufficiently relaxed and warm – the perfect place for a delightful family dinner.

What to do at Crewe Hall
The hotel has everything you need for a restorative weekend away, all under one roof. We visited with a 12-year-old, a 15-year-old and their mum and we were all particularly fond of the fantastic swimming pool. There are lanes sectioned off for swimming lengths and plenty of recliners dotted around the edges, plus there are steam rooms and saunas to relax in once you’ve had your fill of swimming.
The hotel grounds are the perfect place for a Jane Austen-style stroll, although I don’t remember Elizabeth Bennet having the option of playing a giant game of outdoor chess on her travels. We stayed in one of the new family deluxe rooms and once the children were settled there, chilling out on the massive beds with their iPads, the adults went downstairs for a quick tipple at the glamorous Sheridan Bar – a lovely way to round off a luxurious evening.
