Jordan Henderson was one of the first England players to burst onto the pitch as the full-time whistle blew.
He has only played a handful of minutes at this tournament – though he’s been booked twice – yet that hasn’t stopped him making his mark at his fourth World Cup. Now there’s a chance he’s kicked his last ball of the tournament following what’s been described as a wrist injury.
As England do, they serenaded their fans and jumped over the advertising boards behind the goal to sing Oasis hit Wonderwall.
But once that was over, Henderson tried to jump over the advertising boards and appeared to lose his grip, dropping to the floor. He hurt himself in the process of doing that and was clearly in a lot of pain as he lay lifeless on the floor.
It wasn’t clear what happened at the time as a number of England players formed a huddle, which initially seemed part of celebrations.
It then emerged Henderson was in a bad way and I actually accidentally managed to capture what happened in the aftermath of Wonderwall.
Dan Burn was first on the scene to help his team-mate and thankfully, it wasn’t long before he received medical assistance.
Henderson is expected to stay in Mexico City with a member of England’s medical staff on Monday as the team head back to Kansas City. Thomas Tuchel says it’s not clear whether he will need a procedure at this stage.
He said: “He injured his wrist, he’s gone to hospital it’s quite a serious injury. It doesn’t fit with the night. I don’t know if there will be a procedure.”
Captain Harry Kane had initially provided a positive update on Henderson, saying: “ Jordan [Henderson] just fell over there, I think he’s okay, just something to do with his arm.”
But team-mate Jude Bellingham then raised fears by admitting: “He’s in a bit bother but our medical team have it under control.”
