Police and an air ambulance have responded to the incident on Shields Road in the Byker area of Newcastle with a massive cordon in place and many officers seen responding
Emergency services have descended on a Newcastle street with a wide area sealed off after a major “disturbance” overnight.
An Air Ambulance supported the emergency response which centred on Shields Road in the city’s Byker neighbourhood as a person was left seriously injured, the ambulance service said.
A helicopter seen landing in the area last night is understood to have transported the patient to hospital. This morning several police vehicles, including cars and vans, with officers were still stationed at the cordon on Shields Road, Chronicle Live reports.
Last night, a Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 7.25pm today (Tuesday) we received a report of a disturbance on Shields Road in the Byker area of Newcastle.
“Emergency services are in attendance. A section of the road has been closed to traffic. There is no wider risk to the public.”
Meanwhile a statement from the North East Ambulance Service read: “We received a call at 19.24 last night (Tuesday 16 June) to reports of a person seriously injured on Shields Road in Byker, Newcastle.
“We sent two emergency ambulance crews to the scene along with a clinical team leader, our Hazardous Area Response Team and the Great North Air Ambulance, who treated and transported the patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.”
