A coin expert has urged the UK public to check their change now for one rare coin worth a staggering fortune. It’s no secret some change can really surprise you, take this super rare 50p coin which could sell for £40,000.

Posting on TikTok, a coin collector has urged UK households to keep an eye on these three designs – with one worth a staggering £1million.
Speaking with his 271,000 followers, the @CoinCollectingWizard detailed the first coin which was the New Pence Two Pence. He said: “This is a two pence coin from the year 1983. What you need to be looking for is any 2p coin from this year.
“And if it says New Pence instead of Two Pence on the coin then it’s the super rare one worth around £1,500. But remember 1983 only.”
Valuable British Pennies: The 1933 Penny and £1M King Edward VIII Coin
Another design worth mentioning is the 1933 penny which is the ‘holy grail’ of all coins. He explained: “This is a pre-decimal British penny from 1933.
“Now there are many pennies out there and some other dates are valuable too but this one from 1933 is the holy grail. Only seven are known to exist, so if you were to ever find one, then yes it’s worth over £130,000 today.”
And finally, the King Edward VIII penny – believed to be worth £1million. He said this very piece has been known to sell for that sort of money before – so check your change now.
Why King Edward VIII Coins Fetch Millions at Auction
This coin never entered circulation and breaks centuries of royal portrait tradition, making it exceptionally rare. Only trial pattern pieces dated 1937 were struck before his abdication in December 1936.
It’s unique because Edward VIII reigned for only 10 months in 1936 and abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson before mass production of his coins began on January 1, 1937.
The coin also broke centuries-old British tradition as each new monarch’s head faced the opposite direction of their predecessor. In this case, King Edward insisted on facing left – the same as his father King George V – because he preferred that side.
Since it was produced in tiny quantities, it holds a huge value with collectors willing to pay thousands, if not a million, on the coin.
Although a few exist and locked away in the Royal Mint Museum, some were sold at auction with an estimated valuation of £200,000, according to a London auction house.
